There’s A New Computer Mobile Crime Lab In Arizona
Most everyone agrees that those who commit sex crimes should be punished, especially for those who commit crimes against minors. However, just the accusation of committing a sex crime against a minor tends to bring with it an automatic assumption of guilt from the public. That is something that needs to be carefully avoided in order to maintain integrity in the justice system.
There are no crimes that carry the stigma that sex crimes against minors do. Even those who are wrongfully accused, and it does happen, have an almost impossible time recovering their reputation.
The New Mobile Lab Changes Things
One city in Arizona received a new mobile forensics crime lab from Operation Underground Railroad, a group that dedicated itself to fighting sex trafficking. The lab was given to Mesa’s Crimes Against Children Unit and they are putting it to use. They are also vowing to share the mobile unit with law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
The vehicle, decked out with advanced computers, give detectives the ability to gather evidence as soon as they know a crime has been committed. Officers say that this eliminates the need to have to take “computers, hard drives, and cell phones to a special lab to be processed.”
They say that their focus is on gathering digital evidence that may be on a suspect’s electronic devices, such as child pornography and texts or emails exchanged between the predator and the victim.
But Sometimes It Is The Police
One tactic that police use to catch alleged criminals is to pose as children on social media, messenger apps, or in video games. They essentially bait adults into conversations that lead to something more inappropriate. In many cases, they arrange to meet up with the suspect, which is when they make an arrest.
This kind of behavior has been used for a while and gained popularity in reality TV shows, but it is controversial. Many people consider it entrapment and question whether a crime would have even been committed had law enforcement themselves not set it up. However, due to the stigma and the nature of the crimes in question, this type of behavior has been allowed to go on.
The Charges And Consequences
There are serious consequences for people found guilty of committing crimes against children. These consequences extend well beyond prison time and fines. They can follow the person found guilty for the rest of their life.
Consider the following sex crimes in Arizona:
- Indecent exposure
- Sexual abuse
- Sexual conduct with a minor
- Public sexual indecency
- Sexual assault
- Molestation of a child
A person found guilty may face, in addition to prison time, being forced to register as a sex offender for the rest of their life. This puts their name, home address, where they work, and what vehicle they drive online for anyone to access. Being a registered sex offender often means that a person cannot gain employment. It also comes with restrictions on where a person can live.
